Gear Up Scholarship:    

Gear Up is a federally funded scholarship program for any high school student who qualifies and enrolls.

Award Amount: $5,350 per year for 4 years

Requirements:  This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary                           education.

                       Applicants must be eligible (not necessarily enrolled) for the Free & Reduced Lunch. To earn the scholarship, applicant must be Pell                                 Grant eligible (see  www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/governance/notices/iegs/IEGs09-10.pdf),  

                       Have above average attendance (make up all absences and tardies)

                       Graduate with a high school diploma

                       Participate in the Gear Up program (a minimum 30 hours per year of after-school homework and/or free tutoring, if needed),

                       Apply and be accepted to any accredited school in the USA

                       Pass the ACT (whatever score is required by the college to which applied).

L. Ron Hubbard's Illustrators of the Future Contest:  To enter, each student must submit three science fiction or fantasy illustrations, created in a black-and-white medium. Each must represent a theme different from the other two. Entries should be large black-and-white photocopies of a quality satisfactory to the entrant. Entries must be submitted unfolded and flat, in an envelope no larger than 9" x 12". Please note: Entries should not be the original drawings.

The contest has four quarters: Oct. 1 to Dec. 31; Jan. 1 to March 31; April 1 to June 30; and July 1 to Sept. 30. An entry must be postmarked no later than midnight on the last day of the quarter.    Requirements:  This award is for international and U.S. students.   Must have an interest in drawing, painting, or other black and white mediums.                                                    Deadline:  Thursday, 30 September 2010

2010 Red Vines? Drawing Contest:  The entrant must submit his/her original artwork on the Red Vines? Drawing Contest Official Entry Form. Submissions will be entered into one of three entrant categories based on the age of the participant as of Sept 30, 2010: kids (ages 6-12); teens (ages 13-18); or adults (ages 19+).
The student's artwork must adhere to the guidelines specified on the entry form chosen there are two entry form formats: a "Tray" format and a "Jar" format. AES Engineers Scholarship: This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. Students will submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the "scholarship" page at www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm. AES Engineering Solutions will be awarding $500 to the winner.  Deadline: October 8, 2010.

The Horatio Alger Utah Scholarship Program: provides financial assistance to students in the State of Utah who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education.                                                                                 Eligibility:                                                                                                                                                           be enrolled full time as a high school senior in Utah, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;  have a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution); critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; if higher, an explanation must be provided); involvement in co-curricular and community activities; demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of 2.0); be a resident of Utah; and be a citizen of the United States.  The 2011 scholarship application is now open until October 30, 2010. Veterans of Foreign Wars "Voice of Democracy" Audio Essay Scholarship: Students grades 9-12 write and record a 3-5 minute essay on this year's theme: "Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?" DECEMBER

UR Richmond Scholars Program - Oldham and Boatwright Scholars:     To qualify for consideration for the Richmond Scholars Program, the student must submit a complete admissions application. Students apply for admission to the University of Richmond (UR) via the Common Application, including the UR supplement and its essay prompt.   In addition to a completed Common Application, the student must also submit the following: a $50 application fee or approved fee waiver; a recommendation from a guidance counselor or other school official; a transcript complete through the 11th grade; and official results from either the SAT or ACT. TOEFL scores are also required from non-native speakers of English. 

Award Amount:  Up to 7 Richmond Scholars will be designated as Oldham Scholars. These students will receive an award equal to full tuition plus room and board for four years. In 2009-2010, this is valued at $48,490 per academic year.

Love Your Body: 2011 Poster Contest  The National Organization for Women Foundation is hosting a poster contest to celebrate the Love Your Body Campaign.      Artwork: Poster should be no larger than 9" x 12". The poster must include the words 2010 Love Your Body Campaign” and the NOW Foundation web site address, www.nowfoundation.org .    The grand prize winning poster will be used as part of a national campaign to challenge the media's use of violent, drug-addicted, starved, surgically-enhanced images of women and to fight against industries that profit from women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies.  Posters should be graphically attractive and use a dynamic message. We especially look for images that demonstrate beauty is not limited by body size, body type, ethnicity, age or physical appearance.

UVU Mechatronic Scholarships: The College of Technology and Computing at UVU still has almost thirty $4000/year scholarships for students entering the Mechatronics Technology AAS degree program for 2009-2010 school year. Must be a US citizen with a 2.5 GPA or higher and be ready to enroll in College Algebra (Math 1050 at UVU) during freshman year. After achieving an AAS degree in Mechatronics at UVU a student can continue on to a BS degree in Technology Management with a Mechatronics emphasis using if not all, almost all 69 credits (from the AAS Mechatronics degree) towards it. To apply for this scholarship, applicant must first apply and be admitted to UVU declaring their major to be Mechatronics Technology. Then apply on line at uvlink.uvu.edu/cp/home/loginf. There is no deadline for this scholarship. When the money runs out, the scholarships will stop being awarded.

DFW International/Guide to Scholarships for New Americans and Minorities: In 2009, Dallas-Fort Worth International Community Alliance created this excellent website: www.dfwinternational.org/resource_center/Scholarship_Guide.pdf. It’s not only excellent information for new Americans and minorities, but is also excellent for anyone pursing a post high school education. This website helps in preparing for college by offering a timeline for high school students plus information regarding college prep curriculum and tests for college admission.  It gives information on how to enroll in college including how to select a school, types of colleges and college applications. There’s also a section on financial aid including the FAFSA, scholarships, loans and other informational resources. A directory of scholarships including scholarships for international study is at the end. This is well worth reading, especially during your freshman year of high school, but is valuable information to read even during your senior year.

U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship (Utah State): This scholarship criteria includes a 3.0 GPA or higher, an ACT score of 21 or higher, played on team sports in high school or excelled on a recreational team, been involved in student government, clubs at school, church responsibilities and scouting or volunteer organizations. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards: This awards program sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is the nation's longest-running, largest, most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts grades 7-12. Red Storm Retreat at Dixie State College: This retreat is to help get prospective students excited about college education and the opportunities available at Dixie. Students have a choice of one or two days for this retreat on February 19-20, 2010. First day is the College Life Experience featuring student-sponsored activities such as a sporting event or dance and a chaperoned sleepover complete with climbing wall, foosball and other fun games. Dinner is provided. Day two is the Academic Experience and Dixie Information sessions available for both students and parents. Department reps will answer questions regarding academic majors, financial aid, scholarships, etc. Afterwards, students will learn about campus life while parents attend a parent break-out session. Cost is $25 per student for two day experience or $10 per student for one day experience and $5 for Saturday parent session.

University of Utah Access Program for Women in Science and Math: Too many young women believe that only men can have a successful career in the sciences. ACCESS exists to dispel that myth and provide female students an introduction to science at the U. The ACCESS Program is a 7-week summer science course designed to introduce students to university-level study in science and mathematics.  During their freshman year, each student is placed in a university research lab in the field of her choice. Often, this leads to work in the lab throughout her college years, giving many students the opportunity to publish or even present their research at professional conferences--an unheard of opportunity for undergraduates! This also comes with a $3,500 stipend that doesn't conflict with other merit scholarships. College of Eastern Utah Eagle Experience: CEU would like to invite seniors to come to an Eagle Experience.  This FREE experience gives seniors an opportunity to see what CEU has to offer.  Information on admissions, scholarships, leadership opportunities, and other important areas of interest relating to their college education is offered. Seniors may choose from one or two day Experiences. Next Eagle Experience is February 19, 2010. WSU Dream Weber Program: Weber State University’s new Dream Weber program provides free tuition to students whose annual household income is $25,000 or less. Must apply for admissions by March 1, 2010, complete the FAFSA by March 1, 2010, complete the WSU Financial Aid Application by March 10, 2010, and complete the WSU Scholarship Application by March 10, 2010. To be eligible you must be a legal Utah resident, have a household income of $25,000 or less, qualify for federal Pell Grant funds, and be an undergraduate student with less than 150 credit hours.  See www.wsu.edu/dreamweber for more information.

2010 Utah NAME Annual Conference: narratives of bravery & hope: embracing diversity in utah: This conference sponsored by the Utah Chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education is being held at Westminster College on Friday and Saturday March 26th and 27th. There will be a keynote speaker and two invited presenters. A light meal on Friday and a continental breakfast on Saturday are included in the conference fee, plus several $1,000 scholarships offered to qualified applicants (see NEW SCHOLARSHIP LISTINGS above). Expanding Your Horizons @ UVU: Expanding Your Horizons is an exciting conference on Saturday, March 6, 2010 for 6-12th grade girls. Here they will explore educational opportunities and careers in math, science and technology! The girls will be able to choose three hands-on workshops, all presented by professional women in those fields. In addition, girls will be able to explore interactive booths where they can play with lasers, high-tech equipment and much more! Update: A new workshop has been added to the list called "Clinical Laboratory Science." Clinical Laboratory Scientists perform behind-the-scene lab procedures that physicians rely on to diagnose and treat patients. If interested, put "43" on the Workshop Selection. Parents will be able to attend specialized workshops on how to help girls succeed in their education, career and life. A $25 registration fee required. Governor's Honors Academy: The Governor's Honors Academy is a prestigious ten day program designed to seek out Utah's most gifted high school leaders and scholars entering 12th grade. The ten day program, held June 23-July 2, 2010, provides students a stimulating curriculum of study taught by a distinguished and dynamic Academy faculty at Southern Utah University. The cost is $850 for all expenses of the 10 day Academy. Those participants who attend the entire Academy will receive 6 college credits and a 4-year scholarship to SUU. UCCU Short Film Competition: Submit a short (3 minute or less) film depicting what you have learned about "Making Wise Financial Decisions" and you could win one of two awards of $1,000 or $500 for one of four category awards: Most Creative, Most Educational, Most Humorous, or Most Inspirational. Must be 18 years or younger to submit a film. Make it funny, inspiring, educational...have fun and be creative! National Student Leadership Conference: This student conference is for 10th and 11th grade students who maintain a minimum "B" average with demonstrated academic excellence, extracurricular involvement and leadership potential. There are 14 different conference programs from which to choose including, but not limited to: Science, Education, Business, Engineering, Politics, Communications, Medicine, Sports, Law and Theater. The United States Military Academy's 35th Annual Summer Leaders Seminar 2010: This exciting opportunity for high school juniors provides a better understanding of the academic, physical, military, and leadership-development programs at a service academy which are small classes, a caring faculty, professional career preparation, and a foundation for future graduate study. Two sessions offered: May 29th-June 4th and June 5th-11th. Cost is $350/session, excluding transportation to and from West Point. One thousand 11th-graders will be invited who meet the following guidelines: top 5th in high school class, pursuing a college-preparatory curriculum, strong PSAT scores, demonstrated leadership potential by participation, election/selection to office, and honors earned in organized athletic and extracurricular activities. Snow College "Snow Blasts:" For $25 Snow College offers a one night, two day campus visit for senior high school students to come learn what it's like to be a student at Snow.  Stay includes tour of campus, meals, lodging, information & advisement about Snow, tickets to events, and a free Snow T-shirt. Remember, a senior gets one "school-excused" day to visit a college.

Washington University High School Young Writers Institute: High school juniors and sophomores with a B or better GPA are eligible to participate in this two week summer course which includes study with working writers, becoming acquainted with the St. Louis literary community, personal conferences, readings, craft talks, open-mike time, and panel discussions. Washington University High School Summer Program: High school juniors and sophomores with a B+ or better GPA with an ACT of 25, an SAT of 1800 or a PSAT of 180 are eligible for this five week summer course.  Participants will learn what college courses are like by choosing a couple of colleges courses to take and when completed may earn up to seven college credits. USU Leadership Conference 2010: USU and Utah Association of Student Councils have partnered to provide a leadership training conference for student leaders Spend three days at USU (June 21-23, 2010) learning all about communication, initiative, planning, teamwork, and bringing energy to your school. Activities include a ropes course, aquatic center, hands-on break out sessions, guest speakers, a service project, large group workshops, Spirit Bowl, Aggie Idol and dance. Cost is $200 which includes: room, board (3 meals/day), dance, panoramic picture, conference DVD, training manual, and t-shirt. Gallons for Grades: Eligible students may download their best grade report from the 2009/2010 academic year to Tesoro beginning June 1, 2010 at www.TesoroGallonsFor Grades.com or via mail with appropriate sumission form also found at their website. An "A" average grade earns a $10 Tesoro reward card and an average "B" grade earns a $5 reward card. These may be redeemed for gas, food or merchandise at any participating Tesoro location. UVU Financial Aid Workshop: UVU will be offering free Financial Aid workshops, every 2nd Thursday throughout the upcoming year. These events will generally be help in a computer lab in the Sorenson Student Center (Rm. 213A) from 6-8  PM. Orem's Junior Miss Scholarship Program: This program is an official local preliminary of the America's Junior Miss scholarship program that awards college scholarships to young women who have distinguished themselves at school and in their communities.  Orem's JM winner will advance to state competition at Utah's JM and that winner competes in the national competition, America's JM, in Mobile, Alabama.  All State Junior Misses will compete for a share of at least $150,000 in cash scholarships.  For details and to apply online, see:

Practical Dental Assisting of Utah: Have you ever thought about a career in dentistry? This dental assisting training is a 10 week program taught in a state-of-the-art facility in Lindon by highly trained dental personnel. Students learn by doing, instead of solely listening in class. Classes are held once a week from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm on Friday or Saturday. Tuition is $2995 and  internship hours are available with in-house dentist. Wellesley College Announces New NO-LOAN/LOW-LOAN Financial Aid Policy:  As of 2008-09, Wellesley will eliminate loans for low-income students and reduce or keep loans at their historically low levels for students who qualify. Wellesley will also raise scholarship or grant aid beyond its already generous yearly increases. This plan will eliminate loans for students from families with calculated incomes under $60,000. It will reduce loans by one-third for students from families with calculated incomes between $60,000 and  $100,000. For more information see Mrs. Miller in Counseling or their website at:

Harvard College Financial Aid Policy:  Since December 2007, Harvard College has implemented a financial aid policy to ensure families with incomes below $60,000 are not asked to contribute to the cost of sending their children to Harvard.  For more information see
