The Great Outdoors is Unified Studies’ Classroom
Orem, UT –Unified Studies of Orem High School, an integrated educational program, visited the Wedge Overlook, also known as the Little Grand Canyon, for an extraordinary educational experience.
Unified Studies is a unique program that integrates Art, English, Science, Social Studies, and Recreation into one class. This class emphasizes learning about nature and helping students appreciate the natural areas here in Utah. It is a class that is very hands-on and really emphasizes helping students take control of their own learning.
Each year Unified Studies goes to the Little Grand Canyon, in the San Rafael Swell east of Castle Dale, where the High School students learn valuable skills such as how to pack and cook on a campout and how to work together as a group. Other skills include the following: principles of photography, preservation of natural places, drawing the landscape, writing in a journal, collecting native plants, learning about Native Americans, and other forms of recreation.
According to Kyle Carter, a senior in Unified, The Wedge is a place where you can get out of the classroom and learn in a whole new way.
“Learning about plants hands on is awesome,” said Carter.
According to Anna Davis, teacher at Orem High School, Students were able to visit the Rochester Art Panel and learn more about petro glyphs and the native peoples; then they were able to go to the Wedge Overlook itself.
“This trip has a profound effect on the high school students,” said Davis. “It’s a chance for them to unplug the iPod and be still in nature. By doing so, they can learn a lot about themselves and it’s also a great chance for students to bond with each other. We have found in years past that after this trip, our Unified class truly becomes unified.”
